Steel erectors have learned over the last several years about

the benefits of the quick attaching Beamguard™, for steel

erection. Beamguards™ come in various sizes (and a 90°

version for trusses) to cover beams and girders up to 5'

flange thickness and any width flange. However, many steel

erectors have asked repeatedly for a system they can use

when setting beams on concrete piers or columns, or while

setting precast members, including double T and bulb T

beams for bridge and building work. Preferred Safety has

recently introduced a patented system called the Bridge

and Form Guard™ that provides overhead horizontal lifeline

anchorage for two workers working together while setting

precast with post spacing of up to 60'. Clearance below,

with spacing as much as 50', is less than 11' (with retractors).

The system requires a hole for the pole to be set in at least

8"-12" deep in the top of concrete. Simple embeds (PVC

or metal pipe sleeves) are the easiest and require a little

planning during the girder concrete pour and are acceptable

to most design engineers. The system is a series of special

strength and shock absorbing aluminum poles with shock

absorbing toppers that provide a means to dissipate the energy

from the fall arrest, while maintaining rigidity to minimize total fall

distances. Lightweight intermediate poles save on weight,

installation costs, and overall system costs.

Standard shock absorbing lanyards (i.e. 900 lb.

Preferred Safety Series 231, 234 or equal) or retractables

(i.e. Preferred Safety 511RLWD-11 or 520RLCD-20 or equal)

may be used on the horizontal lifeline and two workers may

work within any two poles. Other workers may work on

the system as long as poles separate them from others.

Any reasonable number of lightweight intermediate poles

may be used in one line, with an end pole at the terminating

end, and workers can travel long distances. PassThrus™ at

intermediates are available for the versatile system to

minimize the use of the second lanyard technique for 100%

tie off. The system is useful for fall protection for erectors

connecting to any concrete structure, or setting concrete

precast. The installation and construction safety specialists

at Preferred Safety can help you with a special application,

as unique fall protection needs of erectors is Preferred Safety’s

specialty. Preferred Safety is proud to offer products that are

designed for and by erectors in the field. The new system is

added to the Guardline™, a total system that covers virtually

all erectors’ exposures. Other products included in this family

are the best-selling Beamguard™, Concrete Guard™, Rafter

Guard™, and Column Guard™.
